Building With Us

Here is our earth bag home on the mountain.

-the winter-

Our mild Winter has allowed for some necessary planning and infill work to begin. The space between the bond beam and the roof needs to be closed in. After much deliberation we decided to infill with earth bags of lava rock on two sides (around the beams), with some wood in the center triangular sections(see above photo). Because these bags will not be weight baring, nor are they near to the ground (exposed to weather and balls launched by children), we will have fun adding glass bottles for passive light, and other decor that we opted out of on the lower level.

The south side of the house, where some plaster has been completed, radiates warmth even under the grip of winter. Between that and a small outdoor wood stove, we have stayed warm during our winter house building. Sifting Lava Rock and filling bags has begun! We are awaiting a sand delivery to prepare more plaster. Cold weather application has proved to work just fine, but mixing and keeping the plaster from freezing has been a challenge.

Accompanied by bellowing laughter and squeals of joy, our family has swung from every hammock, swing and bench… With a lot of hard work and even more fun, we continue our mission!
