Building With Us

Here is our earth bag home on the mountain.

Bond Beam

A bond beam is a concrete form which is poured on top of the wall. We used form board which is flexible enough to be made into a circle. The board was one of the very few waste products we accrued during the build. We secured the form with long bolts, pushing it up and down to make it level. 5 ft steel rebar was hammered down into the bags diagonally and vertically. The rebar extends above the bags all around the circle. When the concrete is poured it will cure around the rebar locking the bond beam to the bag walls.. We did various other bracing (suspended rebar) and lined the form with plastic. The whole neighborhood came to watch the show, and luckily it held tight!
